The Future of Design in a Global Market

As this new millennium takes off, design, as a tool, is becoming fully utilized by savvy businesses (and, frankly, people everywhere) to advance their business models and products. Design practitioners have increasingly seen their services outsourced to foreign entities, in-house designers, and, unfortunately, to the kids and family members with "design" programs on their computers.

The question designers/design businesses face is how do we as professionals stay relevant to businesses. Where is our value to large and small corporations. Can we as designers innovate to capture more business at an earlier stage in the process? How can we change our role from technician to strategist and problem solver?

Panelists will discuss the scope of the industry today, how designers can drive change within it, and what tools they can use.

Panelists will include:

--Etienne Fang
, Cheskin
--Rie Norregaard, Frog Design, creative director
--Elizabeth Pastor, Humantific/Next D Institute
--Leslie Wellott, Imagination
--Chee Pearlman (moderator), Chee Company and former editor-in-chief of I.D.
